Programs - BS English

Introduction

BS English program would offer both basic and advanced courses in linguistics, literature and English language. In conjunction, an assortment of subjects from the domain of social sciences is an integral part of this program to instill in the students an interdisciplinary slant. The program courses are particularly designed to equip students with the foundation to orientate and explore their interest, in English literature and linguistics as two distinctive subjects, through specialized courses and dissertation writing.

Advanced and innovative teaching methods and strategies are employed to hone the students’ critic-creative capacities, written and verbal skills, analytical and contextual thinking. The department would organize regular seminars and talks pertaining to the central themes of the discipline to foster community-based learning in the students. Thus, the range of knowledge and the communication skills that BS Social Sciences students with majors in English will procure during the program will prepare them for advanced postgraduate study and research in the discipline, as well as for a wide variety of professions, including careers in education, research, writing, publishing, media, the arts, the Civil Service and management.

Vision

The Vision of BS in English Programme is to offer a degree that addresses the issues of general, open-minded education without creating any specialist streams at this level. The purpose is to give a comprehensive exposure to the students without going into unnecessary distinctions about literature and linguistics, which is of course desirable at the advanced level of research degrees only, as is evident from the nomenclature of degree programs also.

Program Objectives

  • To introduce students to different genres of English Literature and Linguistics
  • To develop oral and written communication skills
  • To enable students to conduct qualitative and quantitative research in the fields of Literature and Linguistics
  • To enable the students to relate their interpretation of literary texts with literary theories.
